Welcome To My Back Yard
When I started this page, I wanted to tell people that they can do simple little things to help wildlife in their own backyards or window gardens or decks, what have you. Plant a wildlife friendly garden, hang a feeder, put out a container of water. I also have many animal issues and want to share my concerns with others.
Now that I am here on the web, I have run into hundreds of other animal causes. So my page seems to wander without focus. However, the focus is animals. It is for those of us who love them. All of them, even the skunks!
Almost everyday I receive mail from animal welfare groups. The problem I have is that they feel compelled to include the most gruesome photo's and stories. I am already involved with animals and am fully aware of mans inhumanity. I hope to have a page that does not horrify anyone. If you care about animals, you already know the bad news. You do not need graphic images that will never leave your mind. You just need to know that you may be able to help and that others are trying...

Premarin, an estrogen-replacement drug taken by more than 8 million women worldwide, has a nasty secret ingredient: pregnant mares' urine.To produce Premarin, approximately 75,000 pregnant mares are tied into stalls so small they can't even turn around or comfortably lie down. Rubber sacks are strapped to the mares' haunches, often rubbing them raw, and the mares are denied free access to water in order to make their urine more concentrated.
The foals resulting from these pregnancies--all but a few kept for stud or to replace worn-out mares--are considered unwanted "byproducts." The foals are sold at auction, then sent to feedlots where they will be fattened for slaughter. Mares, too, are slaughtered when they become lame or infertile.
The good news is that Premarin is the ONLY menopause drug made with animal-derived estrogen. Safe, effective synthetic and plant-derived alternatives are widely available.
Most women have no idea how cruel the industry is. These people are not in the business of animal welfare. They're in the business of collecting horse urine.
Please, urge your doctor to prescribe synthetic estrogen replacement drugs instead of
Premarin.

Individuals & animal organizations around the country are writing Oprah to ask her to do a show on animal overpopulation, spay/neuter, responsible pet ownership & the connection between animal cruelty & domestic violence.

Many "sanctuaries" are merely training and breeding facilities for elephants.
To ensure that the money will not propagate further elephant exploitation, it is imperative that the sanctuary chosen be a member of The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS).
Please urge the USDA to send the money to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, or to a member of TAOS.

Remember the animals and give them a holiday too. Plan a delicious veggie meal filled with fruits, grains, and vegetables. Give thanks that you are aware of the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.
Over 300 million turkeys are raised in the US each year under conditions of crowding, deprivation, mutilation, & manhandling - crammed into large sheds, about 1 square foot of floor space per bird; beaks, toes & wings clipped to reduce damage from aggressive behavior brought on by the extreme stress.
One percent of them die, some from starvation due to the pain. Some drown in water dishes.They are also boiled alive and live through it.
Turkey flesh & skin contain artery-clogging cholesterol, cancer-causing substances, & metabolic waste products. Public vegetarian Thanksgiving dinners provide an excellent opportunity for the media to sample less violent, more wholesome foods & to interview the participants.
